Augmented-Reality mobile app to increase engagement during SAF Army Open House event
AUDIENCE
Tech-savvy users aged 14 – 40.
ROLE
I was the UI and graphic designer for this project in a team that was made up of 8 developers, 4 3D artists and 1 project manager. In addition to creating the UI for the app, I was also in charge of creating some of the supporting assets for the marketing of the event.
OBJECTIVE
The organizing committee for Army Open House were looking for a way to increase the fun and awareness during the event. To do this, their plan was to pack information such as event timings and games into a mobile app.
The app has 4 modules : i) event info / news, ii) live map, iii) AR games and iv) survey.
To make it enticing for users, we overlayed icons of the event’s displays on Google maps based on GPS locations.
The app also features an AR game, where players go around the entire event location, looking for 8 military vehicles.
Once they have found it, they will “collect” it into the app by scanning QR codes located at the vehicles’ exhibits.
These can then be redeemed for prizes at the event’s reward booth.
Players can also send feedback via the app.
In addition, below are some 3D icons I did for the app, used as exhibition landmarks on the map.
CONSTRAINTS
We had approx 2.5 months to deliver this app. As the app contains a lot of AR (Augmented Reality) features, we had to be on the event location to test and ensure the AR markers work and that the app interacts with the various displays smoothly.
CONCLUSION
The app was launched with success, especially for the younger generation who were hooked by the AR features. It also reduces the need for visitors to constantly carry the brochures while they were at the event, as everything in the event can be accessed in a single click, including lucky draws and exhibit directions.
